The Adventures of Robin Hood

The Adventures of Robin Hood Game developer: Millennium Interactive
Game publisher: Millennium Interactive
Game release date: September 1991 year
Game status: Released

There have been lots of movies and games released based on the story of Robin Hood and pretty much all of them are completely action based but this one focusses on adventure instead. The game starts with Robin in his castle having a good time when suddenly the serif of Nottingham comes barging in and takes over the castle as his own. Now stripped of his title and lands Robin sits down by the side of the castle wall and asks himself what to do.

Now you can control Robin and your ultimate aim is to remove the sheriff and take back what is rightfully yours. You'll have to walk around and fullfill your mission by completing a number of tasks. First off you'll have to get some men to help you as you won't be able to do much by yourself. You'll have to assemble a band of merry men that are known from the stories including the well known ones like Will Scarlet and little John. After that you can increase your popularity by robbing from the rich and giving it back to the poor, try and win over maid Marian and ultimately kill the evil sheriff.

The game is played from a birds eye view and it looks a lot like populous with the buildings and landscape build up of layers and the characters depicted by fairly small sprites. You can move by either clicking where you want Robin to go or using the arrows on the screen but unfortunately you can't move using the cursor keys which might have been very useful. Other commands are carried out by simply clicking the items in the left of the screen such as take, talk and shooting your bow. All your adventuring is done while the people walk around and play out their lives doing normal things like getting a haircut or going to the pub which gives the game a more realistic feel.

The adventures of Robin Hood is quite a departure from other games based on the story and the fact that you have to start from scratch and gather all the merry men yourself is quite appealing. Most games based on Robin Hood are action based and I think this is a welcome departure from the norm. Anyone interested in the story of Robin Hood and who's looking for a good adventure game won't do bad with this game.
